UA, Stark State join Mayor’s Scholarship Program

The University of Akron and Stark State College have joined other area colleges and universities in the Mayor’s Scholarship Program.

Mayor William J. Healy II launched the program in 2009 to help students in Canton move further in their academic careers by awarding them scholarships based on academic performance and participation in community service.

“These institutions are critical to the ongoing success of the scholarship program and we are thrilled that they have agreed to participate,” Healy said in a press release. “Adding well respected new institutions such as Akron and Stark State allows our students the opportunity to choose the best college or university to fit their needs.”

The program started as a joint effort between Healy and Kent State University Stark Campus, Malone University, Mount Union College and Walsh University. Other schools, such as Bowling Green State University and The University of Toledo, joined the program later.

Since its inception, nearly 250 students have applied to the program.

Representatives from The University of Akron and Stark State College will also be on hand at the Second Annual Mayor’s Scholarship Fair, which allows Canton students to learn more about the program’s partnering institutions.

The event will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 21 from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Malone University’s Johnson Center, 2600 Cleveland Ave. NW.
